lean in

cover of 'lean in'

as an inspirational and successful leader, sheryl sandberg is a woman after my own heart. naturally, i was very much looking forward to reading her 2015 book ‘lean in’.

when a tad bit bland…

after a powerful starting chapter, however, i felt the remaining chapters to fall a bit flat. as if the book hadn’t aged well.

6 years isn’t a long time, but a lot has happened in the fight for social change since. #metoo, black lives matter and the emphasis on intersectional feminism, for example, to name just a few.

in light of these more recent, but also ultimately even more pressing matters, sandberg’s book seems a tad bit bland to be honest.

… is a good thing

it wasn’t until i reflected on my own working life, and what working in 2015 felt like to me, that i realised this was a good thing.

it might not have been long ago, but things were different then. which means that they have changed. and it is possible, maybe even probable, that sandberg’s book has played its part and contributed to this change.

in conclusion

‘lean in’ might not be for the die-hard feminist, but it definitely still is a nice introduction into the topic for people who are only starting out to look into gender equality.

and should there ever be a follow-up to ‘lean in’ that’s more timely, count me in!
