maybe you should talk to someone

cover of the nonfiction book 'maybe you should talk to someone' by lori gottlieb

‘maybe you should talk to someone’ is my kind of book.

it ticks all the right boxes:

it’s smart and funny, honest and touching. it gives me all the good feels, and it’s narrated by a badass female voice.

that voice belongs to lori gottlieb. in her memoir, she recounts the period in her life when she went from feeling lost and seeking help from a therapist to feeling found.

the twist: gottlieb is a therapist herself. she not only invites the reader onto her own therapist’s couch, but also into her consultation room, onto her patients’ couches.

the result is a heartwarming look inside both sides of the therapeutic process — or should i say the magic of therapy?

because despite all the psychological research sprinkled throughout the book, there’s something extraordinary happening in those sessions. something special. something that’s felt rather than explained. and gottlieb honours that beautifully.

yes, when done right, therapy is hard and uncomfortable. this book, however, is the opposite. it’s light and full of hope. it shows the other side, and it’ll leave you with a warm, fuzzy heart.

at least, that’s what it left me with.
